Hilary Simpson<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My research focuses on the ways in which teachers sustain or suppress adolescent academic motivation. I am specifically interested in how different forms of autonomy support help students stay motivated in class. As a former middle school and high school teacher, my goal is to assist teachers and school leaders in creating learning environments that promote student engagement and enthusiasm. I currently work with Dr. Allison Ryan and Dr. Barry Fishman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anushree Bhatia<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My research explores how social contexts, such as school climate, and networks\u2014including peers, family, and mentors\u2014shape adolescents\u2019 sense of self, motivation, and belonging. I\u2019m currently studying how social support can help alleviate the stresses minority students face in academic spaces due to systemic inequities. I work with Dr. Allison Ryan and Dr. Kevin Cokley. I earned my bachelor\u2019s degree in psychology from Mount Holyoke College and previously worked at Child Trends in Washington, DC, where I contributed to projects on adolescent health and racial equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My research interests include understanding the functions of social status and the development of social networks in adolescent and young adult populations. I currently work with Dr. Allison Ryan. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Denison University in 2022 with a major in Psychology and minor in Sociology. While there, I conducted research with Drs. Hutson- Comeaux and Lourie on adolescent and young adult transitional periods, parenting behaviors, and COVID related stressors in first-year college students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am interested in studying the intersecting roles of family, school, and neighborhood in informing the developmental outcomes of minority children and youth. Currently, I am examining how high-risk children make meaning out of their adverse life events and engage in positive goals during transitional periods (e.g., aspire to high levels of education and have positive psychosocial adjustment). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am interested in studying sociocultural factors that impact STEM motivation and interest. I currently work with Dr. Allison Ryan, and I am in the Combined Program of Education and Psychology. I served as the Lab Manager for the Purdue Early Achievement Research Lab with Dr. David Purpura from 2023-2024 where I worked on early math education and literacy with preschool students. I got my B.A. in Psychology at the University of Kentucky, where I worked with Dr. Matt Kim. Dr. Kim’s work focuses on how the people we interact with (e.g., teachers, family, friends, academic advisors) can impact our mindset and motivation in different academic settings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
