The LMT group developed an early version of what is now the Mathematical Quality of Instruction (MQI) observation instrument, which provides a way of analyzing lessons for the presence or absence of important mathematical activities. Scores capture the extent to which lessons focus on mathematical meaning and practices, students participate in mathematical reasoning and meaning-making, whether teachers use student mathematical ideas, and the clarity and correctness of the mathematics covered in class.

The MQI was developed in order to provide a both multidimensional and balanced view of mathematics instruction, and studies suggest that is both returns reliable teacher scores and that those scores correlate with student outcomes. The MQI may be used in research, teacher professional development, and evaluation.
