The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation were funded by the Division of Human Resource Development (HRD), within the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Authorized by Congress and established in 1991 to help diversify the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce, the initiative ended in May 2025. Throughout its existence, alliances nationwide implemented evidence-based strategies for the recruitment and retention to STEM degree for students historically underrepresented in these disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The LSAMP program priorities were to broaden participation in STEM disciplines by (a) increasing individual student engagement, retention and progression to baccalaureate degrees, (b) enabling successful transfer of underrepresented students from two-year to four-year institutions in STEM programs (c) increasing access to high quality STEM mentoring and undergraduate research experiences, (d) facilitating seamless transition of underrepresented students into STEM graduate programs and (e) stimulate new research and learning on broadening participation in STEM disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From October 2021 through May 2025, the University of Michigan (as the lead institution for the Michigan LSAMP) received funding to continue and expand its LSAMP programming. In addition, NSF supported research and evaluation activities. The MI-LSAMP research initiatives were led by researchers affiliated with the Personal Assets & System Strengths (PASS) Program in the University of Michigan\u2019s School of Education.  Additional information about the research activities can be found here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, the MI-LSAMP evaluation activities were being conducted by Rath Educational Evaluation & Research, a firm that is contracted as MI-LSAMP\u2019s external evaluator. More information about the evaluation activities can be found here<\/a><\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
