{"id":5834,"date":"2017-06-23T09:04:44","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T14:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/studentstories.soe.umich.edu\/?p=5834"},"modified":"2022-04-06T13:18:52","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T13:18:52","slug":"port-elizabeth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/port-elizabeth\/","title":{"rendered":"Port Elizabeth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our next stop is the city of Port Elizabeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/IMG_7058.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/IMG_7058.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7058\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Perched on the shore of the Indian Ocean, Port Elizabeth is a seaside community whose image of itself is still undergoing change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We arrive on a Sunday and have the afternoon to spend poking around the waterfront market where we test our bartering skills against true masters of the craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/DSC_0418.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/DSC_0418.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0418\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our accommodations are in the seaside suburb of Summerstrand, near Nelson Mandela University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/IMG_7093.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/IMG_7093.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7093\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, we have the opportunity to drive 20 minutes north to Zwide Township to visit the Ubuntu Education Fund.&nbsp; This drive help illuminate the stark difference between HAVES and HAVE NOTs living in close proximity, and the work remaining for this young, post-apartheid democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/IMG_75561.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/IMG_75561.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7556\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Located in central downtown Port Elizaeth, we also visit the Donkin reserve, pyramid and lighthouse.&nbsp; The pyramid monument was erected by Sir Rufane Donkin in memory of his late wife, Elizabeth, after whom Port Elizabeth is named.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/DSC_0814-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/DSC_0814-1.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0814\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the evening, we return to the hotel to debrief in small groups, then all together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/IMG_7095.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.marsal.umich.edu\/studentstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2017\/05\/IMG_7095.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7095\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our next stop is the city of Port Elizabeth.
