TEACHING REASONING AND INQUIRY PROJECT IN SOCIAL STUDIES - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (TRIPSS-PD)

ABOUT THE TRIPSS PD PROJECT

Funded by the James S. McDonnell Foundation, we are a team of teachers, teacher educators, curriculum developers, and researchers who are currently developing and testing a sustainable professional development (PD) model to support inquiry teaching in social studies. We see inquiry teaching as a way to engage students in constructing and critiquing arguments and as a way to support students’ disciplinary reasoning, discussion, and writing.

Our Guiding Principles: Collaboration; teachers are leaders; teachers are learners students are “sensemakers;” create spaces for inquiry learning; support students’ language development and disciplinary literacy practices.

TRIPSS PROJECT ALUMS

Read.Inquire.Write. Curriculum Resources for Inquiry Teaching

Social studies calls for critical reasoning in reading challenging texts, considering complex questions, and writing arguments that take positions on important issues. This intellectual work relies on strong language and literacy skills. TRIPSS has received funding from the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Project to create the Read.Inquire.Write curriculum. These resources engage students’ voices and emphasize the disciplinary practices of questioning, considering multiple perspectives, evaluating evidence, and critiquing and constructing arguments.
