About UJIMA

Find out more about the UJIMA project in this informational video:

The UJIMA project has two goals:

  1. To understand the mathematical identities of children–how these identities grow and change from middle school to high school.
  2. To create high quality curriculum that encourages students to develop a new relationship to mathematics. Students will explore the history of math, cultures of mathematics around the world, and mathematics for social justice.

Ujima is a Swahili word meaning collective work and responsibility. This word captures the essence of our work. We are interested in the collective work and collective responsibility in the mathematical development of youth and children. Mathematical success is a collective achievement.
