Prospective Students and Scholars

Ph.D. students:  Ph.D. students who contribute to the MAC are admitted by the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education (CSHPE).  Prof. Bastedo both advises Ph.D. students and supervises research assistants (GSRAs), but admissions decisions are made by CSHPE, not individual faculty.  Ph.D. students on the research team have professional and/or research experience in college admissions or closely related areas.  Prof. Bastedo accepts new students assigned by CSHPE each year unless stated otherwise here.

M.A. students: M.A. students are admitted by CSHPE and Prof. Bastedo accepts new advisees when assigned by the department.  M.A. students on the research team who have some background in college admissions or related areas are preferred, but it is not required.  We generally accept one master’s student on the research team each year through CSHPE’s Master’s Research Opportunities Program (MROP) and do not have the capacity to accept students from other UM programs.

Undergraduate students: We generally do not have the capacity to add undergraduate students to the research team on a regular basis, but occasionally researchers have opportunities on individual projects.  We will most often select students through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).  Marsal students in LEAPS or Ed Minor would generally be prioritized for these opportunities.

Postdoctoral scholars: Unfortunately, we cannot provide financial support for postdoctoral scholars.  Postdocs with existing support may be considered if they are conducting empirical research on college admissions, in the U.S. or internationally.  All postdoctoral scholars must be approved by CSHPE.

Visiting scholars: Faculty and researchers from other institutions who conduct empirical research on admissions policy or practices can be considered to work in the MAC for periods of one year or less.  All visiting scholars must be approved by CSHPE.
